Time is ticking for spring break passports

For the students who are planning to travel abroad during spring break with the EF Education First tours, they need to apply for their passports. Although there is no concrete deadline to apply for a passport, tour adviser and Rancho Cucamonga High School teacher Mr. Alan Allen suggests students apply for their passports soon.

According to the U.S. Department of State, it currently takes 10-13 weeks for the paperwork and photos need to apply for a U.S. passport. If one were to expedite it, it takes approximately seven to nine weeks to finalize.

However, these are just estimated times. Students should know that the process may take longer. Between now and the suggested deadline, students can go to their local city post office or public library to apply for a passport. An appointment is required and can be accessed online. This also applies to renew applications.

“I went to the local DMV [to get my passport], and it was simple,” junior Hugo Alverez said.

The application process requires that one bring along proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Proof of identity is asked for and the following social security number, driver’s license, and state ID or school ID may be accepted.

When applying for a passport, an individual will also have their photo taken. It can be expected that the participant will sit in front of a solid-colored backdrop for their photo. The staff of the post office or library assisting will focus the camera on the chest and above. According to the passport application, this image for people sixteen or above will be valid for ten years before the retake is mandatory. Those below the age will need it retaken in five years.

According to the U.S. State Department, there are a few rules to taking a valid picture which includes not wearing hats, headwear, or glasses.

“I waited four months to get the passport and picture,” senior Elizabeth Sanchez Cano said. “I recommend doing it six months before.”

The passport price is generally the same with either of the locations. When your passport booklet is ready, it will arrive through the mail. The passport will cost about $35, while the photo fee will conclude to about $15.
