“Avatar” is a 2009 science fiction film directed by James Cameron that was highly acclaimed for its story and visual presentation. The story focused on ex-marine Jake Sully and his scientific expedition in the place of his deceased brother to the exoplanet Pandora.
Avatar (2009) is the highest-grossing film of all time, earning over $2 billion at the box office. Critics worldwide praised the film for its imaginative approach to storytelling and reinforced director James Cameron’s ability to create immersive worlds, according to rottentomatoes.com.
“I think I’m really more excited to see how the storyline continues developing,” senior Mia Lin said. “I remember thinking, like, this movie was really well made and they developed the storyline really, really, well.”
After over a decade of waiting, audiences were brought back to the world of Pandora with the 2022 release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.” This second film followed Jake Sully, now a fully fledged Avatar, and his family on their mission to escape mankind, who have returned to Pandora to harvest its resources. The movie developed more of the Na’vi’s alien planet whilst telling the story of a renewed conflict between the Na’vi and mankind.
As 2025 concludes, Cameron brings the world of Avatar back to the big screen with the release of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” in theatres Dec. 19. This movie features stunning new environments and introduces a fierce, war-hungry Na’vi tribe.
Junior Natalie Kruchinsky expressed her thoughts on the focus of future Avatar movies.
“I understand having to stay in the same storyline with Sully’s kids, but I also want them to focus on the side characters,” Kruchinsky said.
The Avatar series and its extensive catalog of characters and settings allow audiences to leave theatres wanting more of the vast world Cameron created. Cameron expressed expanding more of the world with potential movies, with two additional movies planned to release in 2029 and 2031.
