Life is Strange 2, a game developed by Dontnod and published by Square Enix, came out in 2018 and sold over two million copies. This game features five episodes and has good reviews overall.
The game revolves around two brothers facing racism and social issues. In the game, their father, Esteban, gets shot by a cop, which affects not only the older brother Sean but also the younger brother Daniel in multiple ways. Both of them face mental and physical challenges, but Daniel develops powers, giving him telekinesis, which in a way represents his fight for control in his everyday life.
Throughout the game, the brothers continue to face discrimination. Sean, the oldest of the two brothers, is non-stop faced with the challenges that come with being Hispanic in Washington in 2018. Sean later goes to a convenience store to buy food for the two runaways when the owner of the shop comes by, and a fight ensues. Given the option to fight back, the older brother is now detained, and the shop owner calls ICE. Sean knows he can’t let this happen as he fears for not only for himself but also for his younger brother.
Later in the game, the Diaz brothers are met with the same challenge, except the risks are even higher. They attempt to cross the border of Mexico to move to Puerto Lobos, which we learned early on in the game is where Estaban owns land, and the family has always planned to return one day. Before reaching Puerto Lobos, they are again detained and taken into custody at the ages of sixteen and nine.
Despite the fact that this game came out in 2018, many people who play the game are noticing similarities between the game’s plotline and current times.
In recent times, real-world versions of these events have been happening. Children and adults alike have been taken from their homes. Even more so, in January 2026, two individuals, Renee Good and Alex Pretti were shot during encounters with ICE agents.
With recent cases of children being taken, this game seems to speak out for the events that have happened. In January 2026, five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias were detained by ICE and taken into custody. Reports allege that government agents used the child to entrap the father.
Games like Life is Strange 2 are a good way to show representation and compassion for those who have to deal with the discrimination of being a person of color back then and even now.
The characters in the game, Sean and Daniel, show the reality of children whose parents are taken away from them, as well as first-hand points of view of the children ICE targets, and how this can have long-term lasting effects on who they become.
“You truly care for them, empathize with them, and feel attached,” one reviewer named Itamar Hazan on IGN said.
The game is meant to immerse and truly bring players into the lives of characters and in reality people, that in most circumstances they wouldn’t understand. Helping players experience the lives of people of color and Hispanics, the main targets of ICE, that they would not be able to comprehend without the help of the first-person point of view, Life is Strange 2 gives them.
“Made me think a lot about life and how everything can change and nothing is guaranteed,” player Taniabutera said on IGN.
