The Rancho Cucamonga High School varsity girls basketball team is getting ready for another season. Last season, the team went 21-6 overall and 5-2 in league. They ended the season second in the Baseline League. For these players, it’s more than just winning. It’s about connection and improving every day.
Senior Clarissa Romero explained that basketball has always been a part of her life. It was a way for her to bond with her dad. First, she started playing baseball, but then realized she wanted to play something that was more fast-paced and intense.
“My dad put me into basketball, and that’s how we connected. It’s kind of been our thing ever since,” Romero said.
Now, years later, she’s learned how to balance sports and school.
“It’s all about keeping your priorities straight,” Romero said. “You get your homework done when you can, so you have time for practice.”
This season, the team is hoping to excel and prove their chemistry to any opponent at their games. Many of the girls have goals for this season for some good wins.
Sophomore Brooklyn Doby described how her love for the game came from watching her older sister play and compete.
“Seeing her out there made me want to be part of something like that, like a family,” Doby said.
Her goal for this season is to help the team stay motivated.
“Even when we’re losing, I try to keep everyone’s energy up. That’s what makes us stronger,” Doby said.
Game day routines also help the Lady Cougars stay focused. Junior Zara Ahaiwe said she likes to take a few moments to herself before tip-off.
“I usually listen to music and meditate, but right before a game starts, I always say a quick prayer,” Ahaiwe said. “We’re not going to win every game. What matters most is how we bounce back.”
For some of the varsity girls, being part of the team has helped them off the court, too.
“It’s made me more confident,” said Nakia. “People look up to varsity players, so I try to be a leader,” junior Nakia Perkins said.
As the Cougars prepare for the new season, they say it’s about more than just scoring or winning. It’s about trust, playing with heart, giving it their all, and representing Rancho Cucamonga with cougar pride.
