Members of the girls varsity volleyball team celebrate an ace at an RCHS game

The Rancho Cucamonga High School girls varsity volleyball team ended its regular season as Baseline League champs, and made it to the second round of CIF playoffs.

According to the varsity captain senior Macie Bishop, the team has drastically improved since the pre-season games.

“Before the season started, we were not supposed to win league at all, but we won, won everything, and we were definitely looked at as the underdogs,” Bishop said.

Varsity captain Carina Zaldivar is a junior and plays outside on the court. She shared her thoughts about the team’s match against Etiwanda.

“This year, a lot of people expected Etiwanda to win league, and we wanted to show that we had a chance too,” Zaldivar said. “So we came into it super prepared, we prepared that entire week and it was the biggest match of the season.”

One of the other teammates, Lilah Payne is a freshman on the middle and right side of the court. She shared her thoughts on the season.

“We won league and we are about to go into CIF. We haven’t lost home games,” Payne said. “I was nervous, but I just had to remind myself that it’s just volleyball and to not get into my head. I worked hard and did a lot of extra practice.”

Bishop said she was pleased with this season and the bond with her teammates. She is happy with the goals she and her teammates have reached together throughout the season.

“I’ve been loving this season, it’s been great with all the girls on the team, they’re definitely some of my best friends and we’ve been doing pretty well. We’re 10-0 undefeated league champs,” Bishop said. “Ending this season with our goals accomplished and moving forward into CIF with hopes and aspirations of winning multiple games, is the perfect way to end my high school career.”

The girls varsity volleyball team worked very hard this season. They have beaten all expectations for their season and have been doing well.

IN CIF playoffs, the Lady Cougars defeated Murrieta Valley on October 19, 2023 in the first round, but lost against Jay Serra in the second round on October 21, 2023.
