On August 23-25, 2023, boys soccer had their tryouts on the lower baseball fields.

Even though the weather was more extreme during tryouts than in previous weeks, it didn’t take away the level of competition.

“It was very hot, it was fun though,” senior Josiah Pierce said. ¨”We got to see a lot of competition out there. It was very competitive and I like the environment, and we´re excited for the next upcoming year because the competitiveness was there.”

Pierce, a returning varsity player, was able to help along with the players trying out. He said he enjoyed being a part of them.

“It was fun,” said Pierce. “I got to walk around with coach Edgar a lot. I like demonstrating the drills with everybody, it was fun and I just enjoyed being there for my last because I’m a senior this year.”

As tryouts closed, the varsity team was selected for the 23-24 winter season. The team last year finished with a record of 12-6-5, losing to Ganesha High School in the Division 4 playoffs. Even though it has only been a couple of weeks since tryouts, coach Edgar Rodriguez is very optimistic about where the team is at.

“The team looks great we are dealing with a few injuries, but we are excited to have everyone back healthy in time for our first game,” Rodriguez said. “We have begun conditioning as a team and look forward to getting in more team activities. We are building team chemistry so we can have a better dynamic on and off the field.”

Boys soccer plays their first game on November 28, 2023, at Colton High School, with their home opener being 2 days later on the 30th vs. Pomona High School.

“It would be nice to have a bigger turnout for our games,” said Rodriguez. “It helps the boys play at a higher level when we have a crowd that wants to see us succeed.”
