The International Women’s History Month was created in 1987. Beginning on Mar. 1,  the whole month celebrates and honors women’s accomplishments around the world.

Women’s History Month has not always lasted a full month; it was once only celebrated on a day. In the year 1910, it was celebrated on Mar. 8. The day was created by a German activist named Clara Zetkin who named Mar. 8 International Women’s Day, and it was celebrated in Germany, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland.

In California, students began learning about women and their accomplishments. After the holiday was accepted, the task forces in California decided to make the holiday a week. The week quickly spread and the president at the time, Jimmy Carter, decided to celebrate Women’s History Week on Mar. 8 to Mar. 15. In the states of Maryland and Utah, the representatives decided to take part in Women’s History Week.

“Yes, I think it’s very important since even though now I feel like women have a lot more freedom, people still tend to undermine their achievements, especially ones in the past and I think it’s still very important to highlight the successes of women from the past and now,” freshman Kailey Cazenave said.

In the year 1987 Congress announced that the month of March would be known as Women’s History Month, an international celebration that has lasted ever since.
