Valentine’s Day is an annual holiday celebrated on Feb. 14 that is dedicated to expressing gratitude and affection toward loved ones.
The holiday is also sometimes referred to as Saint Valentine’s Day or Feast of Saint Valentine after Saint Valentine. Saint Valentine is a Christian martyr who became a symbol of peace and love due to his compassion while he was in prison. The holiday originates from a Christian feast day that honored Saint Valentine. Over time, it evolved into a cultural celebration of love and romance.
There are many ways people make their loved ones feel special on Valentine’s Day. This holiday is commonly marked by the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and many couples celebrate by going out to dinner.
“I make sure to plan things that will be fun for both me and my boyfriend,” junior Eva Perez said. “Like going out to eat, watching movies, and doing random cute things like making chocolate-covered strawberries.”
However, the holiday is not limited to romantic relationships. Many people also use the day to recognize friendships, family members, teachers, and others who are important to their lives. Schools and communities sometimes organize celebrations or activities that focus on spreading kindness and gratitude rather than romance alone.
A common celebration that has gained lots of popularity is “Galentine’s Day”. Galentines is usually celebrated on Feb. 13 and is a way for people to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their friends. People often gather for brunch or dinner and exchange gifts with their friends.
“This year was my third year hosting Galentines,” junior Declynn Guerrero said. “I love being able to get together with all my friends, and we always have an activity like candle making, eating dinner, making snack boards, and watching a rom-com.”
Although Valentine’s Day began as a religious day, it has developed into a widely recognized holiday that highlights multiple forms of love and connection. Its continued celebration reflects a shared desire to recognize appreciation, care, and meaningful relationships in everyday life.
