The new Rancho Cucamonga High School library celebrated its official grand opening on Thursday, Sept. 4. Before the official grand opening, the new library, which is located in the former MPR, allowed students to only come in before and after school.
“We want to welcome anybody to work here, read here, and study here, but the library is not a place to chill,” RCHS Teacher Librarian Ms. Connie Joyce said. “Still no phones, because when people are coming in here to sit and relax, we just don’t have the space or the manpower to supervise everyone.”
Throughout the month of August, the library staff moved all of the books, technology, and equipment to the new location.
Now that the new library is fully open, classes can visit the library again to work on projects, study, do research, and use the library’s resources to its full potential.Furthermore, freshman library orientation scheduled to begin taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The new library features many significant upgrades, including new furniture, shelving, and a couple of new computers for students to use in the library.
The new furniture, s-couches, and lounging chairs provide students with comfortable seating options. There are also new tables with outlets built into them, so students will be able to plug in their Chromebooks to work.
“I like the new library since the aesthetic is more modern,” sophomore Jayla Anaya said. “The old library was definitely more cozy, but the new library has a cleaner look and I think it will be much easier to find books out in the open.”
The library staff worked to improve the library by providing new spaces for the students and making everything more efficient for staff. According to Joyce, they would like to add a zen or meditation area somewhere in the library if that’s possible, but everything is still a work in progress.
Students can now visit the library before and after school and during lunches. Teachers are now also able to schedule time for their classes to visit the library.
