California State University San Bernardino will be on the Rancho Cucamonga High School campus on Thursday, Nov. 7, for on-the-spot admissions. The event will be held during the school day in the high school MPR.
This event is exclusively for graduating seniors who meet specified criteria and are interested in getting immediate admission into CSUSB.
The requirements are as follows: students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be on track to meet A graduate requirements by May 2025. Furthermore, students wishing to qualify for the CSUSB pre-nursing program must have a minimum 3.7 GPA.
Dr. Sherry Berwick, Assistant Principal of Instruction, shared her input on why these requirements are important to the on-the-spot admission.
Dr. Beriwkc shares some of the academic requirements and tells students that the requirements are meant to help students especially those with after-school programs and activities of unique talents.
“Students at RCHS have many different talents such as sports, art, writing, and for those talents, there are many majors, athletics, and Honors programs available,” Berwick said. “If a student with an amazing talent for art has a low GPA they won’t be able to have that opportunity. That’s why it’s so important to have a high enough GPA for this kind of stuff so that students can have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
RCHS is one of only three high schools in southern California and the only one in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District that has been offered this opportunity of on-the-spot admissions to CSUSB.
Mr. Jeremy Hanson, Assistant Principal of Achievement said this is the first time that Cal State University is offering such an opportunity for RCHS students.
“For the first time, a Cal State or a UC is offering an on-the-spot admission. So on-the-spot means they look at your transcript, they talk to you and then in approximately ten minutes they can tell you ‘yes you are granted admission into our university,’” Hanson said.
The event should only take about one-hour maximum for students to complete the process, and students should bring their fully-charged Chromebooks. Seniors will also receive a designated time to report to the MPR.
During that time, students will get to meet with admissions staff from CSUSB and receive guaranteed admission which they call, Coyote Pass. After this, seniors can start to finish the necessary steps of the application process.
CSUSB is one of the Cal State Universities in southern California. It is located in San Bernardino, California with 17,900 students attending. The university has many academic programs with some of their most popular majors including business, management, psychology, and social sciences.
According to the official website, the university is ranked among the top schools for affordability, quality of education, and student outcomes.
It is ranked number six as one of the most affordable universities in the nation by EDsmart, as of 2023.
“Majority of students don’t take advantage of the university in our backyard, and most start at a community college which is fine but studies showed that 85% of them don’t finish within 6 years,” said Hansen.
Senior Dylan Nixon agreed with this and said that he would recommend this event to future students.
“[It would help me by] getting me somewhere besides Chaffey because I want to go to an actual college experience,” Nixon said.
If students would like to expedite this process, it is recommended that participating students create an account on CSU Apply. Students can find the website link on the Canvas dashboard under the announcement regarding CSUSB on-the-spot admissions.
After students create the account, they can start Quadrant 1: Personal Information. If students need help, there is a video also linked on the Canvas dashboard announcement.
Senior George Ochoa said he is attending the event because it could benefit him in planning for the future.
Ochoca also shared his excitement about the admission and how it’ll help him on his future path with college and himself.
“I’m really interested in attending Cal State after high school. I feel like it’s an easy way to figure out a plan for my future,” Ochoa said.
On-the-spot admissions can be very impactful to students and this CSUSB opportunity is even more special because of the different benefits that it can give to students.
“I hope I get to be accepted before turning in my application and I hope I get to learn from this experience too,” Ochoa said “I think it will help me open opportunities and realize what I’m capable of.”
