As the beginning of October slowly creeps in, Halloween lurks in anticipation around the corner. Students at Rancho Cucamonga High School begin to prepare for the upcoming holiday and all of its activities, like putting up decorations, bringing out warm fuzzy coats, binge-watching horror films, and especially, deciding on a costume to wear on this notorious night.
“I am dressing up. I don’t know what I want to be this year, but I’m thinking of Romeo and Juliet with my boyfriend,” said senior Ariel Gonzalez. “I like dressing up because it’s fun. You don’t get to do it all the time and I like tradition; it’s like tradition to dress up for me.”
Junior Matthew Binsol also commented on wearing a costume this year.
“My plan is to dress up as the David guy from Lilo and Stitch,” said Binsol. “I do like dressing up every year because it’s nostalgic, and it’s always fun to see everyone in costume.”
Many students at RCHS view dressing up as “nostalgic” and “exciting.”
“I like dressing up for Halloween because it’s what I’ve been doing since I was little and the whole experience of dressing up for candy makes it super fun and exciting,” said junior Fiora Wang. “Dressing up for Halloween is a perfect opportunity to show off your costume and have people guess what you are.”
While some RCHS students enjoy the creative side of dressing up, most dress up and go trick-or-treating to acquire the candy.
“Yes, I am dressing up for Halloween,” said junior Melanie Williams. “I like dressing up because I like to get candy.”
Halloween also holds value and many cherishable memories to some.
“Dressing up for Halloween does hold value for me because it brings back childhood memories to when I would sing, ‘Trick or treat, smell my feet, if you don’t care then I don’t care, just give me something good to eat!’ in order to get candy,” Wang said. “And it brings back nostalgia to when my parents had to come with me to get candy but now I go on my own.”
