September is formally recognized as National Suicide Awareness Month. September was recognized as National Suicide Awareness Month in 2008. The reason for this month-long recognition was to increase awareness of suicide in the United States and to provide a platform for addressing this critical issue.
Each Suicide Awareness Month features a designated Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, and every three years there is a following theme to go along with the day.
For 2024-2026, the theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” according to the World Health Organization.
At Rancho Cucamonga High School, the Peer Counseling group is available to students around the clock, and it serves as a valuable resource for anyone in need.
“Peer counseling allows us to empower students to counsel other students,” said Ms. Kelsi Trautwien, adviser of RCHS Peer Counseling. “There is such a stigma surrounding mental health, especially among teenagers. Your prefrontal cortex is still developing, and there are so many changes and transitions.”
As the advisor, she teaches students listening skills to help them connect with their peers on a more personal level.
“If you’re going through stuff, how are you supposed to focus on school, pass your classes, and feel okay throughout the day?” said peer counseling student Kylie Tomblin.
According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, unaddressed mental health issues can negatively impact academic performance.
During the week of Sept. 23-27, 2024, RCHS Peer Counseling has planned events to foster connections and create a culture that values empathy and mental health.
On Monday, Sept. 23, Peer Counseling will host a rock painting event to enhance their rock garden. Tuesday, Sept. 24, will feature a DIY essential oil roller blend activity, followed by yoga after school. On Wednesday, Sept. 25, there will be dog therapy in the MPR, but students must sign up in V104 due to limited spots. Thursday, Sept. 26, will include a friendship bracelet-making session, and Friday, Sept. 27, will feature face painting and otter pops.
As September progresses and beyond, remember that resources are available to help you in times of need. On campus, students can access Peer Counseling in room V104, the Wellness Center, and counselors, as well as licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs). Additionally, you can contact the Suicide Hotline at 988, the California Youth Crisis Line at 800-843-5200, and the California peer-run warmline at 855-600-9276.
