As the new school year starts, Rancho Cucamonga High School’s girls’ volleyball teams take time to practice for upcoming games and tournaments. Reflecting on their last season, members from the teams say they hope to continue their winning streak.
“I am very determined to help wherever I can in the volleyball program to get us to a successful season,” said junior Kaeli Naea, whose positions on the court are outside and middle. “I think the challenges I will face is to continue having a good mentality. During season, it’s difficult to maintain that, but with my team and support from staff it will be easier!”
Ms. Tiffany Johnstone, the head girl’s volleyball coach, also commented on her team’s season. “I think we are having a strong start to our season. The team is coming off of a second place victory in summer league and looking forward to making strides in our preseason,” Johnstone said.
The girls continue to practice, with three-hour practices every school day, Monday through Friday. And while the teams value training for upcoming games and tournaments, they also value camaraderie.
“I love teams that are genuinely supportive of each other, and each other’s success,” said sophomore Lyric Kelly, whose positions are middle blocker and right side. “I think it’s important for every member of the team to feel like family!”
In addition to the volleyball team feeling like a family, Kelly also expressed her love for the sport.
“I used to play basketball but didn’t end up liking it, so last year I tried out and ended up making the freshman team,” Kelly said. “I thought I didn’t like volleyball and wanted to quit, but then I found the love and passion for it. So for a year, I trained super hard every single day, and this year I ended up making varsity!”
Johnstone said she looks forward to this new season. She anticipates upcoming games and has strong faith for her team.
“I see our team doing amazing things in the future. We have strong leadership from our captains and a great mindset for taking on our league opponents,” Johnstone said.
