Rancho Cucamonga High School implemented the Securly pass for the 2024-2025 school year. Securly is a digital hall pass that tracks and monitors student passes electronically. The new addition of this pass is an effort to make the restroom process easier for teachers.
According to Ms. Alyssa Castro, the RCHS Assistant Principal of Discipline, other schools in the district are also using the pass.
“Three other schools in our district already use it and then two additional schools use a digital pass but through another company and they have had great success with it,” Castro said.
According to Castro, the implementation of the pass has been successful so far. However, students have had differing opinions.
For instance, junior Olivia Carter does not think the pass is easier.
“You have to go through the whole sign-in system,” Carter said.
For reference, before this new pass, each teacher determined their own hallway pass rules. In comparison, the Securly pass requires a student to use a Chromebook to log onto Securly.com. Students need to virtually request to leave their classroom and wait for approval. If their pass is approved, they are then virtually timed on how long they are outside of the class.
When interviewing more students, there were similar responses to Carter’s. Although, in the eyes of students, Securly is a tedious process to get outside of the classroom.
Freshman Eva Duarte said the bathroom occupancy rules can make requesting a pass difficult.
“It’s even hard to use the bathrooms because it says maximum capacity attempts,” Duarte said.
Though the system may be easier for teachers and staff, the majority of students seem to have a negative opinion about the new system.
