With the recent heatwave that hit the Southern California area starting on Thursday, Sept. 5, many Rancho Cucamonga High School sports games were canceled or rescheduled because of the high temperatures.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, the high in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. hit 109 degrees. Because of the drastic heat wave, freshman and JV football, girls flag football, tennis, and boys water polo all had games canceled.
According to Bill Burke, the RCHS Athletic Director, there is a satellite on campus that provides accurate temperature readings. Once the temperature reaches dangerous levels of heat, the school must cancel games.
“I feel disappointed about games being canceled because most of the time I would be hyped for the game whether it was my own or another,” said junior Evelyn Do, who is on the girl’s varsity flag football team.
With the high heat in the region, many teams also have not even been able to practice their sports.
“My teammates and I are cooking like bacon on a frying pan,” Do said. “Lately for practice, we would only do video study.”
However, not everyone was as disappointed to not have games in the high temperatures.
“I am a little happy that our games got canceled because it was so hot and I probably wouldn’t have been able to play my best in that weather,” said Avleen Narain, who is on the girl’s JV tennis team. “The heat definitely affects how we played since it makes it harder to keep our energy up.”
Some of the games were rescheduled for later times. They were rescheduled during evening hours when the temperature is not as hot; to ensure both players and bystanders will remain cool and out of the blistering heat.
Freshman football rescheduled their game for earlier in the week in anticipation of the heat wave, and the varsity football game was pushed back an hour and rescheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6. Flag football will play their canceled game on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
