U-CAN HBCU College Recruitment fair
Rancho’s BSU (Black Student Union) attended the U-CAN HBCU College Recruitment Fair at the Ontario Convention Center on Thursday, Sept. 22.
One of Rancho’s BSU advisers Ms. Jenna Jemison said, “There were over 100 Black students that attended.”
This college fair gave students several opportunities to get scholarships and grants. This fair also assured students that they don’t have to be set on one college, which is why there were many different colleges at the fair.
Just some of the universities in attendance were Delaware State, Grambling State, Florida A & M, Morgan State, and Bethune Cookman, among others. At this event there were on-the-spot acceptances and scholarships being given out by these universities. The Phi Beta Sigma fraternity also was giving out scholarships to boys who applied.
When asked what she expected to get out of this event, senior Keh’Tila Turner responded, “I expect to see some colleges and get details on how it will go if I choose to go there.”
Many of the students went without expectations of getting anything out it, but rather it just be an experience for them. Senior Kayden Blankton said, “Honestly, I was not expecting to get anything because my overall gpa was not the hightest, but I ended up with a $3,000 grant, and I was truly grateful for that.”
Many of the students who attended the events said it was a success. “ I do think this trip was a success,” junior Breyana Minggia said. “So many people got many opportunities for different colleges and everyone just looked so happy, and it was nice to see my type of culture.”
